TWO lush new covers for Lovecraftesque 2e - check them out!
over 1 year ago – Fri, Oct 27, 2023 at 05:04:20 AM

Hey folks

You might have spotted some change on the Lovecraftesque crowdfunding page as we've started incorporating images of our new covers. And there are two of them! If you want to see what they look like, read on - they're WIP so things may change, but not that much.

We've taken the decision to split the rules into two books: one which describes the core rules, and one which covers all the supporting material like solo rules, legacy rules, a long play example, and so forth. The main purpose of this was to make the core rulebook as light and straightforward as possible, to maximise the ease of learning and referencing the rules and make it really easy to pass around the table. But the other advantage is: TWO COVERS.

Our first cover image is inspired by the Italian edition of Lovecraftesque. We fell in love with its striking red-and-white colour scheme, and the mind-blowing ghostlight UV art. There were some copyright issues with using the elder sign on our game, so we've asked Vincent Sammy to create our own eldritch sigil to go on the front. Here it is, complete with a mockup of what the UV will look like:

We didn't have a clear concept for the second cover, but then Vincent sent us some ideas and there was one which stood out. I would go so far as to say we drooled over it. Here is cover number 2:

We hope you love these as much as we do! Together with the cover image on the box these will look absolutely gorgeous on your gaming table.

Cheers

Lovecraftesque interviews and media
over 1 year ago – Wed, Oct 25, 2023 at 07:57:30 AM

Hey everyone

We're exactly halfway through the campaign, and we hit 300% funded yesterday. We're really happy with how the campaign is going - thank you for getting it to where it is!

To celebrate reaching the halfway mark, we'd like to share a rundown of Lovecraftesque coverage from across the intarwebs. If you'd like to hear us talk about the game, you've got a lot of options.

  • Yes indie'd are a podcast focusing on indie RPGs. Their interview with Josh covered the whole story of how Black Armada Games got to where it is now, including talking about Lovecraftesque.
  • GMS magazine did a YouTube interview with Becky and Josh, with some insightful questions and discussion about why we designed Lovecraftesque the way we did.
  • Miskatonic university is a podcast covering RPGs and Lovecraftiana. Their interview with Josh and Becky really dives into the detail of Lovecraftesque.
  • Innsmouth gold, another RPG and Lovecraft podcast, went on a wild ramble with Josh and Becky through gaming and gaming-related culture, and we even talked a bit about Lovecraftesque!
  • Plot points podcast dives into detail on RPG topics and you can find a great interview with Becky and Josh on here.
  • Geek native did a written overview of Lovecraftesque.
  • Midlife gamer geek did a written spotlight on Lovecraftesque.

We'll be doing a full rundown of actual plays later in the campaign 'cause there's more coming, but as a foretaste of that, I'll also mention that you can listen to Josh and Becky play Lovecraftesque 2e on Black Armada Tales, or watch Josh play with the Plus One Exp crew.

Hope you enjoy watching, listening and reading to these great stories, and if you see one you particularly like, do share on social media, as it helps us and the great media folks who produce them.

Cheers

Lovecraftesque's scenarios
over 1 year ago – Mon, Oct 23, 2023 at 06:05:00 AM

Hey folks

We're almost at 300% funded and very much in the mid-campaign doldrums. This is a normal part of every crowdfunding campaign, as the enthusiastic early backers have mostly already pledged, and the folk who wait until the last minute haven't arrived yet. But every bit of attention the campaign grabs during this period is vital, because it creates the awareness that will drive late campaign pledges. So, if you're excited about Lovecraftesque second edition and want to see it reach as many people as possible, please do share it, tell people why you're excited, and help people find us.

I said I'd talk a bit more about our Lovecraftesque scenarios, and here's the remaining ones that are included in the core box:
  • Mr Giggles Comes To Dinner by Misha Bushyager. This one was first commissioned as part of the first edition of Lovecraftesque. We loved the idea of a child's imaginary friend turning out not to be so imaginary after all, and let's face it the things kids come out with sometimes can be pretty creepy. It's been a favourite on the con circuit and we had to update it for the new edition.
  • On Ilkla Moor Bah'tat by Becky Annison. Another first edition stalwart. Non-Brits may not be familiar with the name, which comes from a traditional song about getting lost on the bleak and wild Ilkley Moor. Becky always said it sounded like an eldritch chant, and in this scenario it is. The mix of world war setting and weird blasted moors is a killer combination.
  • The Chicxulub Horrors by Santiago Villa. This is one I'm particularly excited about. The Yucatán is such a cool place, with the remnants of the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs sitting side-by-side with deep jungle and ancient ruins. This scenario adds another ingredient to the mix: the weird art of the (fictional) artist Hervé Pelletier, whose wife Amaranta Vera goes in search of him after he goes missing, and finds out what strange things he was up to before he vanished.

The core set of six scenarios represents a really broad swathe of possible Lovecraftian set ups, from traditional creepy old mansions, to weird space horror, to Roman eldritch tales, alongside those listed above. Plus of course the core deck allows you to make unlimited settings of your own devising, in about 15 minutes, ready for you to dive in and build a horror mystery.

By the way, I've just posted a discussion about possibly creating a Lovecraftesque System Reference Document (SRD). If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, head on over and let us know what you'd want that to look like.

Thanks as always for supporting Lovecraftesque!

Reminder: Lovecraftesque AP stream tonight
over 1 year ago – Fri, Oct 20, 2023 at 09:54:52 AM

Hey folks

Just a reminder that we have an AP stream of Lovecraftesque tonight, with Actual Play UK. Actual Play UK brings together performers from different AP streams and podcasts, so you get some very talented performers (plus me). The session was recorded earlier in the week; we played through one of the expansion scenarios, The Outer Gods by Nick Bate. It's weird gothic space horror and it was a lot of fun to play through, as well as a damn fine eldritch tale.

You might be thinking "what about spoilers" - no need to worry there. Lovecraftesque scenarios provide lots of juicy ingredients for story but they don't include a pre-determined path or even pre-determined clues. If you want to know how that works, watch the AP!

The stream is 8pm BST / 3pm ET tonight (Friday 20th October). Hope you enjoy it!

Watch Lovecraftesque this Friday on Actual Play UK!
over 1 year ago – Mon, Oct 16, 2023 at 03:44:31 AM

Hey everyone!

We're entering week 2 of the campaign and things are going really well - we're over 250% funded now.

We have an Actual Play stream coming up tonight this Friday* at 8pm BST (3pm ET), so if you'd like to see the new edition being played, hop on and join us. Actual Play UK are hosting - they're a great community bringing together AP streamers and podcasters from across the UK. We are going to be playing one of the scenarios from the game, so if you're curious to see how they work now's your chance. We'd love to see you there!

While I'm here, can I direct your attention to this discussion post. I'm interested to hear which virtual tabletops people like and use, so if you have views on that please head on over and let me know what you think. If you use Roll20, come and tell us; if you don't use it and prefer some other VTT, let us know!

As always, thank you all for supporting Lovecraftesque.
Cheers

Josh

*My mistake - we're recording tonight, the show will go live on Friday. Sorry for the confusion!
